Aufstieg und Fall des Hellsehers Eric Jan Hanussen alias Klaus Schneider, der nach einer Kopfverletzung, die er sich im Ersten Weltkrieg zugezogen hat, über telepathische Kräfte verfügt und im Berlin der 20er Karriere machte. Nachdem er den Wahlsieg Hitlers vorausgesehen hatte, wird er vom Nazi-Regime für seine Zwecke beansprucht. Der erklärtermaßen unpolitische Hanussen gerät immer mehr in die politischen Machtkämpfe und wird sich der Gefahren und Verantwortung, die von seiner Begabung ausgehen, erst langsam bewusst. Als er dann den Reichstagsbrand von 1933 vorhersagt, ist es schon zu spät.
