Herb Brooks hat einen Traum: einmal die Goldmedaille mit dem US-Eishockeyteam bei den Olympischen Spielen zu gewinnen. Was ihm als Spieler nicht gelang, versucht er nun 20 Jahre später als Trainer. Für die Olympischen Winterspiele 1980 in Lake Placid stellt er eine bunt zusammengewürfelte Truppe aus jungen und unerfahrenen College-Spielern zusammen. In nur sieben Monaten muss Brooks sie zu einem Team formen, um gegen den ultimativen Gegner bestehen zu können, die als unschlagbar geltende Mannschaft der UdSSR. Als Familie Roberts erfährt, dass es noch einen freien Platz im großen Rennen des Wisconsin Heißluftballon-Festivals gibt, welches von Tante Adele organisiert wird, entscheidet sich die ganze Familie – George und Margaret sowie die Kinder Barbie, Skipper, Stacie und Chelsea, spontan hinzufahren. Barbie möchte am Rennen teilnehmen, als Co-Pilotin steht für sie direkt ihre sportliche Schwester Stacie fest. Vor Ort gibt es dann aber eine große Enttäuschung: Stacie ist zu jung und darf nicht am Rennen teilnehmen. Überhaupt scheint sie für alles entweder zu alt oder zu jung zu sein und fühlt sich von allem ausgeschlossen. Können Barbie und Stacie doch noch zusammen an den Start gehen?
