Eine Gesellschaft in der nahen Zukunft, in der ein Leben zu zweit das oberste Gebot ist. Singles werden verhaftet und in eine Anstalt namens „The Hotel“ gebracht. Dort haben sie genau 45 Tage Zeit, um einen passenden Partner zu finden. Scheitern sie, werden sie in ein Tier ihrer Wahl verwandelt und im Wald ausgesetzt. David gelingt die Flucht aus dem Hotel in den Wald, wo allerdings „The Loners“ das Sagen haben. Das Dogma ihres restriktiven Regimes ist das Alleinsein. Partnerschaften sind streng untersagt. Doch David verliebt sich in eine Frau – und verstößt damit gegen die Regeln.
