In der gar nicht mehr so fernen Zukunft ist die Welt buchstäblich ins Wasser gefallen. Die Polarkappen sind geschmolzen und die Überlebenden der Apokalypse versuchen auf künstlichen Müll-Inseln ein neues Gemeinwesen aufzubauen. Held der friedfertigen Atoller ist der unbeugsame Mariner. Als wilde „Smokers“-Piraten die Insel angreifen, flieht Mariner mit der 10jährigen Enola, die noch den Weg nach Dryland kennt. Bald darauf fällt das Mädchen jedoch in die Hände der Piraten. und Der Mariner nimmt die Verfolgung auf.
