Der gottesfürchtige Polizeisergeant Howie kommt vom Festland auf eine abgelegene schottische Insel, um das Verschwinden eines jungen Mädchens aufzuklären. Zu seinem Entsetzen muss der aufrechte Christ in Uniform feststellen, dass vom kleinen Kind über den alten Fischer und dem Kneipenwirt bis hin zur Lehrerin und dem Adel die Menschen auf dieser Insel nicht nur etwas zu verbergen haben, sondern auch offen und unverhohlen einer alten, heidnischen Naturreligion anhängen. Als er sich einer Mauer aus Lügen, Widersprüchen und Rätseln gegenübersieht, keimt in Howie ein schrecklicher Verdacht auf. Planen die von Lord Summerisle angeführten Inselbewohner im Rahmen eines bizarren Fruchtbarkeitsrituals tatsächlich ein Menschenopfer für eine reiche Ernte, nachdem die letztjährige so schlecht ausgefallen war?
