Der rosarote Panther ist ein großer Diamant mit rosarotem Schimmer und einem kleinen Schatten in der Mitte. Da der aussieht wie ein springender Panther, bekam der Edelstein seinen Spitznamen verpasst. Im italienischen Wintersportort Cortina d’Ampezzo wird er vom englischen Meisterdieb „Das Phantom“ (David Niven) stibitzt. Jaques Clouseau (Peter Sellers), ein trotteliger Inspektor, ist ebenfalls am Skiort zugegen und setzt nun alles daran, den cleveren Gauner endlich zu stellen. Der aber versteht es, seine Häscher zu täuschen und immer wieder abzuschütteln. Wird es dem Inspektor trotzdem gelingen, seine Lebensaufgabe zu erfüllen? Und wer von den Urlaubsgästen treibt noch ein falsches Spiel…?

Inspektor Clouseau (Peter Sellers), der trotteligste Polizist ganz Frankreichs, soll einen Mord aufklären, der sich in der Villa des millionenschweren Lebemanns Benjamin Ballon ereignet hat. Die attraktive Maria Gambrelli (Elke Sommer) gilt als Hauptverdächtige für den Mord, aber Inspektor Clouseau vertraut seinem untrüglichen Instinkt, dass Gambrelli unschuldig ist. Clouseaus Vorgesetzter, Chefinspektor Dreyfus (Herbert Lom), ist jedoch felsenfest davon überzeugt, dass Gambrelli die Tat verübt hat, und will Clouseau deswegen aus dem Verkehr ziehen, kann sich aber innerhalb des Polizeiapparates nicht durchsetzen. Also macht sich Clouseau weiter an die Ermittlungen. Er versucht, die wieder frei gelassene Gambrelli zu beschatten, damit sie ihn zum wahren Mörder führt, scheitert aber an seiner Trotteligkeit und sieht sich deswegen immer weiteren Leichen gegenüber.

Eine Welle des organisierten Verbrechens bricht über Europa herein und Inspektor Clouseau wird mit der Lösung des Falls beauftragt. Angeblich soll ein Maulwurf bei Scotland Yard aktiv sein. Die Verbrecher verüben sogar unter Clouseaus Namen die Verbrechen, doch die Gangster haben nicht mit der Genialität des trotteligen Inspektors gerechnet.

Inspektor Clouseau (Peter Sellers) hat es zum Chefinspektor der Sûreté gebracht, nachdem er seinen bisherigen Chef Dreyfus (Herbert Lom) mit seiner Tollpatschigkeit an den Rand des Wahnsinns getrieben hatte. Als Dreyfus aus der Nervenheilanstalt entlassen werden soll, sorgt Clouseau auf seine Weise dafür, dass der Ärmste endgültig verrückt wird und nach der Flucht aus der Anstalt alles daransetzt, Clouseau zu vernichten. So sieht dieser sich von einem internationalen Aufgebot heimtückischer Killer gejagt, aber nicht einmal die sind seiner umwerfenden Trotteligkeit gewachsen.

Peter Sellers und Herbert Lom liefern sich in diesem Blake-Edwards-Film ein Duell, das an grotesker Komik seinesgleichen sucht.

Bei der Jagd auf einen Drogendealerring hat Inspektor Clouseau das Zeitliche gesegnet – zur Freunde seines Vorgesetzten Dreyfus. Dieser übernimmt den Fall nun selbst, weiß aber nicht, daß Clouseau gar nicht tot ist, sondern die Drogenhändler nur in diesem Glauben halten will, damit er ungestört ermitteln kann. Als Dreyfus immer und immer wieder glaubt, den Verstorbenen zu sehen, ist er kurz davor endgültig den Verstand zu verlieren – wieder einmal!

Noch einmal Peter Sellers als Chaos und Verwüstung hinterlassender Inspektor Clouseau auf der Jagd nach dem berühmten gestohlenen Diamanten. Als er mitsamt Flugzeug verschwindet, recherchiert eine Journalistin seinen „Werdegang“. Ein aus alten, teilweise nie verwendeten Szenen und einer neu gedrehten Rahmenhandlung entstandener, liebenswürdiger Nachruf auf den Komiker Peter Sellers und seine legendäre Verkörperung des vertrottelten Polizisten. Diese „Resteverwertung“ hinterläßt allerdings einen schalen Nachgeschmack, da sie neben einigen genialen Slapstick-Gags auch viele schwache, überflüssige Szenen enthält, die nur dazu dienen, den Film auf abendfüllende Länge zu strecken.

Schuldig oder nicht? … David Gale ist ein fürsorglicher Vater, angesehener Professor und vehementer Gegner der Todesstrafe. Umso härter spielt ihm das Schicksal mit, als er für den Tod seiner Mitstreiterin Constance Harraway verantwortlich sein soll und deshalb selbst zum Tode verurteilt wird. Kurz vor der Hinrichtung bekommt die Journalistin Bitsey Bloom die Chance für ein Exklusiv-Interview mit dem Todeskandidaten. Ziemlich schnell bemerkt sie bei ihren Recherchen, dass Gale fälschlicherweise des Verbrechens beschuldigt wird. Bevor es zu spät ist, beginnt für beide ein verzweifelter Wettlauf gegen die Zeit.
