Naomi ist eine erfahrene Weltumseglerin und Tauchlehrerin, die sich auf eine Solo-Reise begibt, um ihren Freund Jackson in Grenada zu treffen. Ihre relativ entspannte dreitägige Fahrt auf der 47-Fuß-Yacht „The Serenity“ nimmt jedoch eine unerwartet dunkle Wendung, als ein Sturm sie von ihrem geplanten Kurs abbringt. Nach dem Abflauen des Sturms zieht Naomi zwei Schiffbrüchige aus dem Meer. Jonas Taylor und sein Kollege leiten ein Forschungsteam, das einen nicht ganz ungefährlichen Tauchgang plant, der das Team rund um die beiden in bisher kaum erkundete Tiefen des Ozeans führen soll. Gänzlich ungestört bleiben die Meeresforscher auf ihrer waghalsigen Mission jedoch nicht. Denn auch ein knallhart kompromisslos vorgehendes Unternehmen für Unterwasser-Bergbau hat bei der Suche nach wertvollen und noch abbaubaren Rohstoffen ein Auge auf die noch unausgebeuteten Tiefen geworfen. Doch als gleich mehrere der Meg genannten riesigen Urzeithaie aus den finsteren Ecken der ozeanischen Untiefen auftauchen, scheint der Konflikt mit dem gierigen Konzern im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes auf einmal eher das kleinste Problem zu sein. Der Kampf ums schiere Überleben beginnt und entwickelt sich schnell zu einem Rennen an die rettende Oberfläche.
