Niemand mag den Lehrer Paul Hunham (Paul Giamatti) – weder seine Schüler noch seine Kollegen, noch der Schulleiter. Alle finden seine Aufgeblasenheit und Starrheit nervtötend. Da er keine Familie hat und in den Weihnachtsferien 1970 nirgendwo hingehen kann, bleibt Paul trotzdem in der Schule, um die Schüler zu beaufsichtigen, die nicht nach Hause fahren können. Denn nebenher hat der Mann – komplett in Eigeninitiative – auch noch ein anderes Programm entwickelt, mit dem er Sexualtäter aufspüren will, die in Internet-Chatrooms versuchen, Minderjährige in ihre Falle zu locken. Gareth erklärt den Beamten, dass sein Lockvogel, die kleine Cherry, kein reales Kind sei. Ursprünglich habe er einen Chatbot kreiert, der sich dann aber ohne sein Zutun zu einer fortgeschrittenen künstlichen Intelligenz entwickelt hätte. Die Bundespolizei war überhaupt erst auf Gareth aufmerksam geworden, weil ihnen anonym eine Festplatte mit sexuell anmutenden Fotos von Cherry zugeschickt wurde. Wie sich herausstellt, hat die KI die Bilder offenbar selbst an das FBI übermittelt .
